WEEK 5: Christopher Myers: A Writer's Story

I really enjoyed this video. I liked the fact that Christopher Myers, a children's author came to speak to the students at P.S 304 because he's someone they look up to. He made it a point to say everyone has a story to tell. He was able to bring them confidence by using his personal experiences from his childhood, such as his neighborhood, individualism, etc. He used aspects such as his big feet, height, hair, being the youngest in class, all to differentiate himself from his classmates and that is something he appreciated as he grew up. It shocked me to see the young boy's response to Christopher Myers' question about Anthony. He said Anthony could fix his problem by having plastic surgery and that was really sad because we can tell how fast these kids are growing up nowadays.

Question: What are some ways that you can encourage students to be proud of who they are?

  1. Ways that you can encourage students to be proud of who they are is to bring to their knowledge of how everyone is different. You can share your own inspirational story, share inspirational stories of others, and even inspirational stories of icons or famous individuals. I say famous individuals because most kids in today's society look up to celebrities and iconic figures and perhaps these hildren can find it exciting or aspirational that if these iconic figures find it okay and acceptable to be "different", that maybe it is okay for them to accept and be proud that they are different as well.

  2. One way for a student to be proud of who they is to maybe have an international day where a student can tell the class about their culture and how that makes them who they are. Also students can right an autobiography and share it with the class. they could also do a presentation about themselves showing pictures and just letting them be full out creative with it. Remind the student that people like us (as teachers), the authors who make the books they read or even the president of the united states was just like them: A student.

  4. I think you could encourage your kids to be proud of their differences amongst their peers by having them all point out some of their differences and highlighting them as their positive qualities. By showing the students that being different from one another makes them who they are is very important in building their confidence and selfesteem.

  5. 1)Keep your class as multicultural as possible
    2) Show your students that they have more similarities than differences.
    3) Put them in someone else's shoes how would they feel if they were that student being picked on because they were "different"?
    4) Make sure they understand that differences can include more than just physical and cultural as well as our similarities!
    5) As I said in my post a day where students can share their story about what makes them different!
